MMA ODDS AND ENDS FOR WEDNESDAY: INJURIES DERAIL BIG FIGHTS
We covered the loss of the enormous upcoming heavyweight co-main event for UFC Fight Night 76 yesterday with the announcement that Stipe Miocic was forced to back out of his struggle from Ben Rothwell, but there is more to the story and also some other struggle announcements/injuries to go over now. UFC appears to be searching for a short notice substitute for Miocic to step in and combat Rothwell in Dublin, and a couple of notable names set their names into the ring. The very first was Matt Mitrione, who was battling very nicely against Rothwell earlier this season before diving into a takedown attempt that got him submitted immediately via guillotine choke. Mitrione wouldn’t likely be the first option due to his quick defeat, but he’s a case considering his desire for salvation. The largest problem with Mitrione right now is that the simple fact he’s now booked to battle Travis Browne in January. The other and most fascinating replacement chance came from out of left field as world class kickboxer Tyrone Spong requested a chance to fight Rothwell. Spong, who now trains with the Blackzilians at Boco Ratan, has made a name for himself as perhaps the best light heavyweight striker on the planet with a kickboxing listing of 74-7-1 with one no contest. His mixed martial arts credentials, however, are a lot more sparse. Spong is currently 2-0 at MMA, with two successes under the World collection of penalizing banner, although he hasn’t fought an MMA bout in over two decades and hasn’t competed professionally in any battle sport since suffering a leg injury against Gokhan Saki 18 weeks ago. The biggest problem here will be money, as I’m convinced signing Spong to some UFC bargain on short notice wouldn’t come cheap. In other accident replacement news… Justin Lawrence vs Emmanuel Sanchez — Bellator 145 Unfortunately, an accident to former Bellator champion Pat Curran has forced him out of his fight against Justin Lawrence just over three months before his departure was set to take place. In measures Emmanuel Sanchez, a 25-year old fighter from this Roufusport Gym in Milwaukee using an 11-2 record overall. Sanchez is now 3-1 under the Bellator bannerlosing a decision to Curran currently and most recently picked up a split decision victory over Henry Corrales just two and a half ago at Bellator 143. This will certainly not be a simple for fight for Sanchez, particularly on short notice and with such a quick turnaround. I’d anticipate Lawrence for a medium to heavy favorite by the time the chances are drawn up.
